I am the only daughter of the Scott family. From the moment I was born, I was the center of everyone's attention, cherished like a princess. Father, Harry Scott, is a titan of the business world, controlling the economic pulse of half the city. Whatever I desired, I always got. Until I met Kevin Lincoln. He stood beneath the sycamore tree outside the company, wearing a shirt faded from too many washes, his eyes unbelievably bright. I knew he came from a poor background, that his parents died young, and he finished college on student loans. But I was still hopelessly in love with him. When Father found out about us, he locked me inside the villa for three days and nights. "Wendy Scott, if you dare marry him, I will cut you off from everything!" he shouted, slamming the table as the veins on his temples bulged. I shouted through the door, "Dad, I will only marry Kevin Lincoln! Even without the Scott family's money, I can be fine with him!" "Wendy, what are you doing here?" His voice faltered with panic. My hand gripping the test results went white at the knuckles, but I couldn't speak. Ruby Duncan stood up, straightening her clothes, a defiant glint in her eyes. "Miss Scott, it seems you already know about me and Mr. Lincoln." A cold smirk played at the corner of her lips. I suddenly snapped back to my senses and slapped Ruby Duncan hard. "You vixen, how dare you seduce my husband!" I shook with fury. Ruby Duncan covered her face, tears instantly streaming down as she looked at Kevin Lincoln with a pained expression. "Mr. Lincoln, I didn't mean to..." I expected Kevin Lincoln to blame me, to take Ruby Duncan's side. But he came over, pulled me into his arms, and told Ruby Duncan, "Secretary Duncan, you're fired. Leave my company immediately." I froze, looking up at Kevin Lincoln. He gently ran his hand through my hair, his voice soft: "Wendy, don't be mad. This is all my fault. I swear I won't let you suffer again." In that moment, all my anger and pain melted away like smoke. I thought he was just confused for a moment—that somewhere inside, he still cared for me. But I never imagined this was just the start of my nightmare. When I was five months pregnant, my mother suddenly became critically ill. I received the call from the hospital; I was terrified and rushed there immediately. When I arrived, the ward was completely empty—none of the doctors or nurses who had been at my mother's side were anywhere to be seen. "Where are the doctors? Where are the nurses?" I grabbed a passing orderly and asked urgently. The orderly stammered, "A woman just came—said she's Mr. Lincoln's secretary—and told all the doctors and nurses to go to another floor, claiming it was an emergency." My heart skipped a beat, and I immediately thought of Ruby Duncan. I ran in the direction the caretaker pointed, and sure enough, I saw Ruby standing at the end of the corridor, talking to several doctors. "Ruby!" I shouted, rushing over. Ruby turned around, saw me, and a smug smile spread across her face. "Miss Scott, what brings you here?" She asked, feigning surprise. "Why did you get the doctor away? Do you know my mother is gravely ill?" My voice trembled with anger. "I was just following Mr. Lincoln's orders." Ruby shrugged, her voice indifferent. "You're lying! Kevin Lincoln would never let you do this!" I refused to believe it. "Believe it or not," she said. Ruby smiled, "Anyway, no one is taking care of your mother right now. If anything happens to her, don't blame me." That sentence completely infuriated me. I raised my hand and slapped Ruby hard across her face, again and again. "Smack! Smack! Smack!" The sharp slaps echoed through the corridor. Ruby was stunned, and after a few seconds, she broke down sobbing loudly.
